Aston Villa players power rankings: September’s winners and losers

0

Aston Villa achieved some important firsts in September, including a first goal and a first win as they finally got their season rolling.

Villa started September with a goalless draw against Everton after the first international break, the last time they failed to score in a game. Brentford knocked them out of the Carabao Cup on penalties before a pretty dismal 1-1 draw against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Wins at Villa Park against Bologna and Fulham have changed the mood to say the least and your Villa player ratings followed.

Consequently, the second AVF Power Rankings of 2025/26 are rather more competitive than the first.

The process is simple: each month, we’ll be taking an average of your post-match player ratings (scored out of 10) for the matches played in that month and ranking the players based upon those averages.

Here’s September.

1 | Ezri Konsa (7.0)

Our Aston Villa Player of the Month is centre-back Ezri Konsa, who has been approaching his best even as Villa were in a difficult spot. Villa haven’t been especially leaky this season and Konsa is a big reason why.

2 | Marco Bizot (6.8)

Villa’s new stand-in goalkeeper has played twice more than planned already in 2025/26 and his performance against Bologna earned him a very tidy player rating. There aren’t many teams with a better number two.

=3 | John McGinn (6.6)

I love John McGinn. There, I said it. I said it here too.

=3 | Matty Cash (6.6)

One of my favourite things about this season has been seeing Matty Cash playing reasonably well and being judged accordingly by most sensible Villa fans. Forget the noise. The Polish Cafu is having a strong season so far.

5 | Pau Torres (6.5)

Pau Torres is about to become one of Villa’s most important players and he looked it against Bologna last week and after replacing Tyrone Mings against Fulham. A new lease of life couldn’t have been better timed.

6 | Boubacar Kamara (6.2)

Boubacar Kamara has looked a class act since the day he walked into Bodymoor Heath but he’s now the kind of player whose absence is felt keenly every time he’s not on the pitch.

7 | Emiliano Martínez (6.1)

Villa’s first choice goalkeeper has been in and out of the team since the start of September and the low ranking is presumably a consequence of a couple of individual errors on the ball. His handling and shot-stopping have been in good nick.

8 | Harvey Elliott (6.0)

It’s been a mixed bag so far for Villa’s newest signing. Harvey Elliott has demonstrated his abilities and even scored Villa’s first goal of the season, but he’s also been singled out for tough love from the gaffer.

=9 | Lamare Bogarde (5.8)

My personal ratings for Lamare Bogarde have been pretty high this season. He’s a player I like a lot, and I like him a lot when he’s playing in midfield. Lots more to come from this lad.

=9 | Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba (5.8)

Sure. I think Jamaldeen Jimoh has shown some ability worth getting excited about but coming on late in a bad team performance and not stinking out the place doesn’t make him Villa’s ninth-best player. Sorry.

11 | Ian Maatsen (5.7)

Somewhere, there is a perfect blend of Ian Maatsen and Lucas Digne. I want that player. There’s an awful lot to like about both of Villa’s left-backs but neither has put together a particularly impressive month.

=12 | Emi Buendía (5.5)

Honestly, it’s astounding to me that Emi Buendía is on this list, never mind that I think he’s way too low down it. Fair bloody play. The story of the season so far.

=12 | Tyrone Mings (5.5)

Come back to me at the end of October and tell me Tyrone Mings is a 5.5/10 player. Villa will miss him while he’s gone.

14 | Lucas Digne (5.4)

See Ian Maatsen.

15 | Evann Guessand (5.3)

Evann Guessand became quite a divisive figure in his first few Villa matches, for reasons I never quite understood. Now, he’s a more unifying player for reasons I understand entirely. He’s heading up these rankings next month without a doubt.

16 | Jadon Sancho (5.2)

Jadon Sancho’s start at Villa has been broadly encouraging, I’d say, but the direct impact on matches is yet to materialise for the Manchester United loanee.

17 | Victor Lindelöf (5.0)

Victor Lindelöf has been on the pitch for 17 minutes so bang average on the player ratings front is just about the only logical outcome. I haven’t really noticed him yet, in truth.

18 | Donyell Malen (4.7)

Yet more questions for Donyell Malen, who got his Europa League start against Bologna and then looked on as Guessand and Ollie Watkins started to show what they’re about against Fulham.

19 | Ollie Watkins (4.5)

Watkins scored a goal on Sunday and looked like the most relieved man in football. I’d be willing to wager we start to see more of the real Ollie from now on.

20 | Morgan Rogers (4.0)

It’s been a bad, bad start to the season for Villa’s golden boy. I sincerely hope the beginnings of a recovery that were on display against Fulham can come to fruition soon.
