WTA roundup: Sofia Kenin advances in San Diego

Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion who is looking to improve on a rough season, registered a first-round upset at the San Diego Open on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old American beat sixth-seeded Veronika Kudermetova of Russia 6-4, 6-4. Kenin hasn't advanced to the quarterfinals of an event since getting to the semis at Hobart, Australia, in January.
