Strandbeests, or “beach creatures” in Dutch, are an intricate collection of PVC pipes, fastened together with plastic ties. Designed to move and scoot across beaches, powered by the wind, they are the brainchildren of artist and engineer Theo Jansen. Jamie Wax reports.
