Ruffini chair by Mungenast / Morroni
Dezeen Showroom: German architecture studio Mungenast / Morroni aimed to be at the forefront of manufacturing and sustainability with this chair, which is 3D-printed from recycled plastic.
First made for an exhibition at Munich's Ruffinihaus building in 2024, the Ruffini chair has a sinuous form that appears to billow in and out, with the seat taking on a ribbon-like shape.
The shape is based on double-curved surfaces, which can bear heavy loads with minimal use of material. This allowed designers Moritz Basil Mungenast and Luc Morroni to give the chair a wall thickness of just 8 millimetres.
The designers chose a three-legged shape for the chair, which makes it steady on uneven ground. It can be orientated into either a reclined or upright position.
Mungenast and Morroni's vision for modern, sustainable manufacturing includes cutting down on transport emissions by having the chair produced on-demand locally to its destination. For instance, a chair was recently 3D printed at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
The Ruffini chair can be 3D printed from the sawdust-based Econitwood material as an alternative to recycled PETG, and its colour and surface is fully customisable.
