Adilo pendant lamp by Ilkka Kauppinen for Secto Design
Dezeen Showroom: made of ultra-thin birch plywood, designer Ilkka Kauppinen's sculptural Adilo pendant lamp for Finnish brand Secto Design unfurls from flat.
The Adilo lamp is made from ribbon-like slats of birch plywood that look delicate but are very strong, unfolding from a flat-packed state for shipping into a layered, spiralling orb-shaped structure that gently filters light.
The design is by Kauppinen, an up-and-coming Finnish talent who Secto Design founder and creative lead Tuula Jusélius discovered at a young designers showcase.
Originally trained as a wood artisan before embarking on industrial design, Kauppinen developed Adilo over many years using a complex modelling process, and Jusélius felt it was a "perfect match" for the wood lighting brand.
"I have always envisioned lamps that could be shipped and stored flat yet effortlessly transform into elegant, full-scale design pieces in the hands of their owners," said Jusélius.
"That's exactly what Adilo is. In addition, it is made from the same Finnish birch wood as the rest of our collection."
The Adilo lamp is available in two sizes and is made in Heinola, Finland from responsibly sourced wood certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification.
