NEARLY a decade ago, I was the then Archbishop of Canterbury's chief spin doctor and arranged for Dr Rowan Williams to guest-edit the Left-wing weekly magazine New Statesman. We duly filled the edition with the archbishop's chosen correspondents - Philip Pullman, William Hague, AS Byatt, Richard Curtis, Iain Duncan Smith. The recently deposed prime minister Gordon Brown was in there too, but demonstrably this was not an exclusively Left-wing line-up.
