At first glance a dish of twenty-first century baker’s yeast has little to do with starving pregnant women in Holland in the winter of 1944-1945. However, both produced evidence that Charles Darwin was wrong when he called the ideas of colleague Jean-Baptiste Lamarck “veritable rubbish.”
