The White Sox looked like a Little League team after they completely botched a rundown against the Phillies
The White Sox are impossibly bad.
The White Sox went into this season with low expectations, and against all odds, they’ve managed to look even worse in the early going of 2024.
We’re nearing May, and the White Sox have baseball’s worst record and offense. But their defense also looks the part for baseball’s worst team. And when you’re botching easy outs like they did on Sunday, it’s clear this team is in for a long season.
During the first inning against the Phillies, Martin Maldonado seemingly had Bryce Harper caught stealing. But the Phillies star intentionally got into a rundown, hoping to distract the White Sox long enough to bring Trea Turner home from third.
I don’t think Harper even expected it to work out this perfectly.
Instead of turning his attention to Turner at third, Lenyn Sosa chased Harper back to first without making a real effort to get Harper out. But by chasing Harper back, Sosa put himself in a position where his momentum was taking him away from home. So, he was forced to make an off-balanced throw that had no chance of getting out the speedy Turner. His attention really should have been on Turner the entire time.
On top of that, Sosa threw the ball away, allowing Harper to take second after all of it.
It was the kind of play that MLB teams shouldn’t be messing up, and fans were right to roast the White Sox for it.
