Top 10 shortest Best Actor Oscar-nominated performances [PHOTOS]
Recently, short Best Actor-nominated performances have been scarce at the Oscars. The average screen time of the past decade’s nominees is over 77 minutes, and only a handful of them failed to reach one hour. Still, performances that fall under 60 minutes make up nearly one-third of the category’s nominees, with plenty boasting much less time. Tour our photo gallery to learn which 10 Best Actor-nominated performances are the shortest of all time.
This countdown is presented in terms of physical screen time, meaning any time an actor actually appears on screen or can be heard off screen. Moments involving non-visible or audible scene presence are not factored in. Almost all of the 476 performances ever nominated here were successfully counted, except for the lost ones of Emil Jannings (“The Way of All Flesh,” 1929), Richard Barthelmess (“The Noose,” 1929), Lewis Stone (“The Patriot,” 1930), and Lawrence Tibbett (“The Rogue Song,” 1930).
All 10 of the entrants on this list won prior to the start of the 21st century, with the newest being from the 64th Academy Awards in 1992. The overall screen time average for Best Actor nominees is one hour, 10 minutes, and 49 seconds – higher than any other category.
