[Men's Basketball] Total Team Effort and Chew Double-Double Factor Heavily in Win Over LPU
EL CAJON, Calif. – A fantastic day of San Diego Christian College basketball was capped off with a huge 92-78 victory by head coach, Dwayne Cosby's men over the visiting Life Pacific University Warriors.
The Hawks got off to a slow start and watched the visiting Warriors jump out to an early 2-6 lead after only 1 minute of play. The team snapped out of the funk a minute later when junior guard, Jonah Felix splashed home the first of his three treys on the day. Thirty seconds later, he would hit his second to even the score.
Six minutes in, a Cameron Dashiell three-pointer would put the Hawks out in front and they would never trail again. Greg Chew and Felix would continue to convert rebounds into points while the SDCC bench joined in on the scoring. San Diego Christian would build a 15-point lead by the half.
Having let a couple of large leads slip away earlier in the season, the Hawks were on a mission to play a complete game. In the second half, almost every time the Warriors would score, the Hawks would answer immediately. The combined defensive and offensive efforts never allowed Life Pacific to get back into the game.
As well as the offense played, the defense was the deciding factor in the game. As a team, the Hawks outrebounded the Warriors almost 2-1, 43 for the Hawks, 24 for the Warriors. The sheer volume of rebounds the Hawks pulled in created a ton of extra offense and contributed to a 94-74 shot advantage.
The offense for San Diego Christian came from all over the lineup and saw six Hawks reach double digits. Greg Chew and Jonah Felix led the scoring for SDCC with 19 points each. Felix also provided 5 assists. Ausage Siamu, Simaine Stewart-Jenkins, and Ryan Blackmon each had 12 points, and Cameron Dashiell scored 11 and added 6 assists.
On defense, the Hawks were equally productive. Chew pulled in 10 boards, and had a steal. Felix had 9 boards and missed a double-double by only 1 rebound. Siamu hauled in 8 rebounds, Stewart-Jenkins picked Warrior pockets 4 times and Dashiell did 3 times.
"Today was the first time that we truly played as a team", said coach Cosby. "We left Arizona humbled, but we left as a team. Today's 25 assists on 32 made field goals was an indicator of how good we can be when we share the ball. The duo of Greg and Jonah has been a pleasant surprise. Together, they combined for 38 points and 19 rebounds and we needed every bit of this production. In addition, Simaine and Ryan gave us double-digit scoring off the bench. It was a total team effort for 40 minutes."
