Breakthrough glaucoma surgery starts in Oklahoma

Tonight at 10 p.m. on KFOR, News 4's Ali Meyer is reporting on a medical breakthrough for Oklahoma patients with glaucoma.

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - Thursday night at 10 p.m. on KFOR, News 4's Ali Meyer is reporting on a medical breakthrough for Oklahoma patients with glaucoma.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness around the world.

For the past ten years, researchers at Glaukos have been testing a microscopic device implanted in the eye to treat glaucoma.

News 4's Ali Meyer was in the operating room for the very first procedures in Oklahoma; one of first in the country, for this miraculous treatment.

Jo Ann Bellmon, 70, was diagnosed with glaucoma in 2014. It is the same disease that caused her mother to go blind many years ago.

"I was real concerned, and I didn't want to go down the same path," Bellmon said.

She is one of the very first patients in the world to undergo an FDA-approved cutting edge procedure to manage her glaucoma without eye drops.

Thursday at 10 p.m. join News 4's Ali Meyer for an in-depth report on this incredible medical breakthrough.
