Charges filed in deadly OSU hit and run case

Charges have been filed against an Oklahoma man involved in a fatal hit-and-run the lead to the death an OSU student.

STILLWATER, Okla. (KFOR) — Charges have been filed against an Oklahoma man involved in a fatal hit-and-run the lead to the death an OSU student.

Payne County First Assistant District Attorney Patrick Crowe says 21-year-old Tyler Peters was driving on Cantwell Avenue when he hit and killed Gabrielle Long as she crossed the road.

"We've charged Mr. Peters with leaving the scene after an accident involving death,” said Crowe.

A report from OSU Police says the particular intersection where the crash happened does not have a marked crosswalk.

"Kind of a tragic history with Stillwater in terms of vehicles striking pedestrians,” said Crowe.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Long was “lying in the road, her left leg was bent at an unnatural angle,” her breathing was weak, and she was bleeding.

Prosecutors said the evidence at the scene and surveillance video led to the charge.

"The Stillwater officer ultimately stopped Mr. Peters in what they believed to be the same truck that they saw on surveillance video and that's how we connected the dots."

Court documents say it was around two hours later when police arrested Peters on East McElory Road, just a little over a mile away from the scene of the crash.

Peters has pleaded not guilty and is out on bond.

Crowe said he’s confident in the charges filed.

"Our goal is to try to seek justice for the victim's family and also seek justice for the community as a whole,” said Crowe.

Investigators said it doesn’t appear Peters was under the influence of any substances.

Peters is set to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on April 1.
