People scramble for cash floating around after open safe found on North Carolina roadside
Traffic was halted on a North Carolina road Tuesday after a safe found on the side of a road caused people to clamber for loose bills, according to police.
KNIGHTDALE, N.C. (WNCN) - Traffic was halted on a North Carolina road Tuesday after a safe found on the side of a road caused people to clamber for loose bills, according to the Knightdale Police Department.
Just after noon, fire crews spotted the safe and called the Wake County Sheriff's Office.
The crews said people were going after the money as it blew around, so they called the sheriff's office to stop traffic to prevent people from taking it.
The Wake County Sheriff's Office later said there was "a significant amount of money that was in the safe and also blowing onto the road."
Traffic along the road was stopped only for a brief time. It was not clear where the safe came from or how much money was in it.
By mid-afternoon, the Wake County Sheriff's Office had possession of the safe and was trying to track down the owner. The sheriff's office continued to investigate the incident.
