Chicago's infamous 'Rat Hole' is now filled
So long, "Chicago Rat Hole."
CHICAGO (WGN) — RIP (Rest in Pavement) to a popular Chicago treasure.
The "Chicago Rat Hole," the city's viral urban wonder, has been filled in. For months, the imprint, which many locals said was caused by a squirrel - not a rat - could be found in the 1900 block of W. Roscoe Street in the city's Roscoe Village neighborhood.

The "Chicago Rat Hole" appears to be restored on Jan. 19, 2024, after neighbors requesting anonymity cleaned the impression in a Roscoe Village sidewalk that had been filled in by a concrete-like material.

It had been there for years, neighbors said.
But months ago, a photo of the rat-shaped imprint in the sidewalk went viral, thus becoming a tourist site and popular attraction for locals. There was even a 'Rat Hole' wedding.
But 32nd Ward Alderman Scott Waguespack said neighbors grew tired of locals and tourists swarming the area, taking pictures, making noise, and littering the sidewalk with items left as offerings.
So long, "Chicago Rat Hole."
