Dog alerts NW Oklahoma City family of house fire
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - They say every dog has its day, and thanks to one pup, a northwest Oklahoma City family is alive and well.
Oklahoma City fire officials said the families pet alerted them to a fire that started in their garage allowing them to get out safely.
Ring doorbell video shows a neighbor witnessing the big blaze from across the street early Monday morning.
"I got dressed, I came on out and I looked and there's five fire trucks,” neighbor Pete Quinones said.
When fire crews got to the scene they said the fire was coming through the roof over the garage.
"The homeowner had a previous water leak and the sheet rock was missing from the ceiling of the garage, which allowed the fire to quickly spread into the attic space,” district chief for the Oklahoma City Fire Department Andrew McCann said.
McCann said that allowed the attic to burn hot and quick. Eventually, the fire caved in the roof. Four people were inside, two adults and two kids. Luckily, they got out safely.
"They were alerted by a dog barking,” McCann said. “The dog alerted them to the fire and they evacuated the residence."
"She needed a hug, bless her heart,” Quinones said speaking about his neighbor.
Quinones lives across the street. He said he didn’t see any flames and only awoke to a call from his neighbor and flashing emergency lights. He said he knows his neighbor very well. She cleans homes professionally and has cleaned his before. Now, he’s returning the favor as they recover from a frightening situation.
"I told them that when they come back, I may not be here, but to call me and I'll get the code to my house, they can come in and stay there and do whatever they have to do,” he said.
There were two dogs and three cats inside the home. McCann said two of the dogs and one of the cats were OK. He said they were still looking for the other two cats at the time. No firefighters were injured while fighting the blaze and the cause is still under investigation.
