'Feels like a warzone': Cleanup efforts underway in Sulphur following devastating storms
SULPHUR, Okla. (KFOR) — The community in Sulphur is still recovering from Saturday's tornadoes and is trying to get the town back on it's feet.
"Just devastated," said Larry Combs, a business owner.
"It's just sickening to see," said Allison Combs, a business owner.
Larry and his daughter Allison have an antique store in Downtown Sulphur called "Hello Again."
Most of what they had inside was gone in the blink of an eye after tornadoes wrecked communities across Oklahoma.
"It feels like a warzone, I mean with the helicopters going all day, it's just eerie," said Allison.
Larry said they opened the shop years ago after he and his wife retired.
The roof was ripped off, debris and tree limbs were scattered across the ground blocking the family from even trying to save what they can.
"It's hard to process," said Larry.
Larry was a pastor for 40 years, and has helped people going through tough times a lot, but said it feels different when it's you.
"When it's close to home, that's when it's kind of a reality," said Larry.
As Larry, his family and many other Oklahomans deal with the disaster left behind, the Red Cross has set up a location at Crossway Church to give people a safe place.
"We know people need shelter, they need food, they need water, they need supplies to help them clean up. And they just need somebody to offer them some comfort and hope right now," said Matt Trotter, with Red Cross Oklahoma.
Despite all the damage that has been done, Larry said he's praying his strong community will bounce back from this tragedy.
"It's a wonderful town and I hope we can recover from it," said Larry.
