Oklahoma Poison Center urges families to stay safe as calls spike 17%
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — With summer in full swing and the Fourth of July around the corner, the Oklahoma Poison Center is reminding families that fun in the sun can come with some very real risks.
In fact, the poison center sees, on average, a 17% increase in call volume during summer months compared to winter.
Experts say summer items can become dangerous in an instant.
"We want everyone to realize that the chlorine tablets, whenever you have those enclosed for several months, maybe in your shed or something, that chlorine will kind of build up in that container," said Kristie Edelen, managing director, the Oklahoma Poison Center.
Pool Chemical Safety Tips:
· Open pool chemical containers outside in well-ventilated areas.
· Keep kids and pets far away when using or storing chemicals.
· Never mix chemicals, this can cause toxic gas or explosive reactions.
· Use gloves, eye protection, and designated scoops.
· Store securely in original containers, away from other household items.
If ingested it can be extremely dangerous.
"That chlorine gas that builds up in there will kind of hit you like a ton of bricks and it can cause some pretty severe respiratory symptoms, so coughing and chest tightness and things like that," said Edelen.
Hydrocarbons like torch fuel are also a common culprit this time of year. Often used for backyard ambiance or to repel mosquitos, the fuel looks strikingly similar to apple juice.
"People will pour it into a water bottle and to two, three, four year olds that looks like apple juice that's been poured into a water bottle," said Edelen.
Just a few drops in the airway can lead to chemical pneumonia, respiratory distress, or worse.
Torch Fuel Safety Tips:
· Always store torch fuel in its original container, locked up and out of reach.
· Never leave fuel near drinks, snacks, or coolers at picnics or campsites.
· Do not transfer torch fuel into food or beverage containers—ever.
· Put the child-resistant cap back on immediately after use.
