MWC Oklahoman competes for $20K in Junior Ranger competition
MIDWEST CITY, Okla. (KFOR) — A young Oklahoman is hoping to win a Ranger Rick Magazine competition to further his community service by mowing lawns for those who can't do it themselves.
"It's better to be outside than inside," said Cannon Deeter.
12-year-old Cannon Deeter spends the majority of his summers outside and on the grass. Rather, cutting the grass.
For three summers now, he's mowed hundreds of lawns. Some are for his lawn care business. He mows other lawns free of charge for people like the disabled, veterans, or the elderly through the Raising Men Lawncare Service.
"Either they can't do it if they're old or disabled. Or they don't have the money or the time," said Deeter. "If [the lawns are] easy, it'll be like 30-45 minutes, but if they're like really long, it's like an hour and a half to an hour."
It's a community service he's been recognized for by the Mayor of Midwest City.
When he's not mowing lawns, he loves to be out under the sky.
"I like going camping, hiking, fishing, kayaking, and anything outdoors," said Deeter.
Deeter said he sleeps best while camping. That's where it's peaceful. You can smell the earth and listen to the sounds.
That's why he entered into the Ranger Rick's Jr. Ranger Competition.
The winner gets to be on the cover of the magazine and meet Animal Planet legend, Jeff Corwin.
Voting for the quarter-finals ends on Thursday, July 10th. Then, it's off to the semi-finals.
Deeter is after the grand prize, $20,000.
"I'll get a riding mower so I can help more people with the longer and bigger yards," said Deeter. "I'm going to buy an enclosed trailer for my lawn care business."
A prize to further help his community, one blade of grass at a time.
