Salvation Army kicks off 'Bucks For Bikes' Campaign
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - It definitely doesn’t feel like Christmas outside right now with the holiday still a ways out, but you’ll see the little red kettles outside Oklahoma City metro businesses this month. The 20-year tradition of raising “Bucks for Bikes” starts now for the Salvation Army of Central Oklahoma.
You know the sound well when the little red kettle bells start ringing. They may not have the seasonal snow or cold temperatures around them, but Christmas giving in the heat of July can help a child get a bicycle.
"For 20 years, the Salvation Army here in central Oklahoma, the women's auxiliary, has put together this fundraiser called Bucks for Bikes,” Maj. Analese Ryerson said.
About 98 of the red kettles will make their way to several businesses and organizations across the Oklahoma City metro.
"You can put in a few bucks, and we'll be taking care of children in our Angel Tree program,” Ryerson said. “Get some bikes for those kids.”
Rows and rows of bikes filled the Salvation Army of Central Oklahoma’s warehouse last year when they raised $48,000 to buy over 540 bikes. So, when you hear the little bell, just know that a little giving can go a long way.
"A lot of people think of us as a Christmas organization, but we help people all year round and even in July, we're thinking of our kids,” Ryerson said.
The fundraiser will last the rest of this month. You can also donate directly to the Salvation Army of Central Oklahoma to help out as well.
