Phase one of Boardwalk at Bricktown set to begin by end of this year
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — A massive development that could change Oklahoma's skyline and bring more things to downtown is moving forward.
"Bringing fresh energy to our riverfront district, as we look skyward the Legends Tower is climbing toward the tallest building in the plains," said Teresa Rose, chair, Greater Oklahoma City Chamber.
It was even discussed at this year's State of the City address, the Boardwalk at Bricktown has leaders excited about what's to come.
"It really has to do with almost a what they call a live, work play environment," said Scot Matteson, CEO/President, Matteson Capital.
Phase one of the project is already fully funded and will consist of hospitality, dining, entertainment and some retail.
Matteson says that phase is set to break ground by the end of this year.
"About a 30 month process, we may be able to do it a little bit faster than that. We're looking into how to accelerate that schedule right now," said Matteson.
But it's the second phase that's turning heads, the proposed Legend's Tower, a 1,907 ft. skyscraper that would become the tallest in the nation.
The plan has drawn sharp criticism from some in the community and the Federal Aviation Administration.
"There is some concerns about the height of the building, but I think we'll be able to resolve those," said Matteson.
Matteson says there is a plan if the FAA doesn't approve the plans.
"If we don't and for some reason, we can't build the building that tall we will make it as tall as we can get the FAA to approve," said Matteson.
Matteson says it won't impact the overall project too much, since the tower is part of phase two and they'll have time to work things out.
He also says they have a couple projects planned for downtown that they haven't announced yet.
That news is expected to break in the next few months.
