Woman pays thousands to fix bathtub, still broken two months later
BETHANY, Okla. (KFOR) — An Oklahoma woman is out thousands after she says the contractor she paid to re-do her bathtub suddenly ghosted her.
However, the contractor says it isn't his fault.
"At first I had to haul water from the kitchen, heat it up in my kettle pot, bring it in here like 30 times to get it ankle deep," Jana Spruiell said.
For two months, that is how Spruiell has had to take a bath.
"Then I found another electric kettle that was short enough to fit under the faucet in the sink, so I started using that," Spruiell said.
She is not happy that she has to continue to take baths this way, two months after paying to get it fixed.
"I paid him $3,610," Spruiell said. "He sent pictures of the box on his trailer, and he said, I'll bring it this day at least six different times. I will bring it. I will bring it, I will bring it. It hasn't happened yet."
She paid him on June 3rd, and says communication stopped in early July.
I got in touch with the contractor, Jay Revival Renovations, who says the job wasn't finished because Spruiell canceled the job.
"We got it on order, got it all, picked it up, and then she canceled the job on us," Jay said. "Normally when somebody cancels on a job, you lose your deposit."
When we asked Spruiell about it, she pulled up their text messages.
"Actually he's the one that suggested I'll just bring it, you get someone else," Spruiell said. "I didn't ask that."
She says Jay agreed to drop off the materials, but excuses kept flooding in.
"He said it'll be dropped off Sunday afternoon," Spruiell said. "It didn't come on Sunday. On Tuesday, I said, is your truck okay? He says, my truck is in shop. A worker is going to bring it down. Wednesday, he says sorry my phone broke. He headed that way to drop off, but no one would answer the door. He will be back Monday or Tuesday and he will try again. He has your phone number this time. I said I was here all afternoon. What number should I watch for Tuesday? Today is the day to deliver. The next Monday, if you're still willing to do the job, I'm willing to pay the agreed price minus what I've already paid for materials. Nothing, no answer."
Jay insists this is not his fault, but he will reach out again.
"She cancelled on me, I did nothing wrong," Jay said. "When I get a day, I'll contact her and set up another day to drop them off."
However, Spruiell is skeptical.
"I hope that you guys will be able to get him to do the right thing," Spruiell said.
Spruiell is a retired special education teacher on a fixed income, and says she can't afford to pay someone else thousands of dollars to fix her bathtub.
We will follow up next week to see if Jay dropped off the materials.
