Suspect leaves driver's license behind after pursuit in Spencer
SPENCER, Okla. (KFOR) — A short pursuit took a violent turn over the weekend with the passenger of the fleeing vehicle being run over, and the suspect still on the run.
Oklahoma County deputies say the pursuit happened Sunday evening at around 11:30 p.m. near Northeast 52nd Street and North Westminster Road.
While the suspect hasn't been taken into custody yet, deputies say it shouldn't take too long.
"We looked for quite some time, we weren't able to find him, but fortunately, he's not a very bright guy and he left his driver's license right in the front seat of his vehicle," said Aaron Brilbeck, public information officer, Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office.
That mistake made it easy for deputies to identify the suspect as 23-year-old Kaleb Wilson.
The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office shared a mugshot of him with us from a previous arrest.
On Sunday evening, deputies tried pulling Wilson over for speeding, but instead of stopping, he hit the gas and led deputies on a short but dangerous pursuit.
"The guy turns a corner, and when he does, his passenger, who clearly didn't want to be inside the vehicle, she bails out, she jumps out, she lands in a ditch right next to the road, and he winds up running her over," said Brilbeck.
Fortunately, deputies say she is going to be okay.
Wilson, however, was still on a mission to escape. He pulled into his own driveway, hopped out, and ran into the woods.
"Which makes for a dangerous situation for our deputies. We are always leery about pursuing people in the woods because you just never know," said Brilbeck.
Brilbeck says what would have been some minor charges are now very serious.
"He's now facing charges that include eluding a police officer, vehicular assault, and kidnapping, so he's facing some serious time now as a result of this," said Brilbeck.
He also says this case is a reminder that you should never run.
"Sooner or later, we're going to get you, and when we do, we're going to add more and more charges onto it," said Brilbeck.
Wilson is not in custody yet, but News 4 will keep you updated.
