Oklahoma man shot by wife's boyfriend denies shooter's self-defense claim
EDMOND, Okla. (KFOR) – An Oklahoma man recovering after being shot by his wife's boyfriend outside of an Edmond business says he doesn't believe the shooter's claim that the incident was in self-defense.
Court documents say the shooting happened on July 22, outside a plasma donation center. 21-year-old Micah Hill told investigators he shot Andres Winslow in self-defense. Hill said he was sitting in his girlfriend's car, who is also Winslow's wife, when Winslow approached the car and looked inside. Hill said that he was scared, given his previous history with him.
Hill said Winslow had previously spat in his face, threatened him, and even showed up at his job looking for him, resulting in Hill being fired. Documents said that because Hill was afraid, he grabbed a gun from his girlfriend's purse and got out of her car. Hill told police that Winslow lunged at him, so he shot him twice.
In an interview with News 4 on Monday, Winslow denied any wrongdoing in connection with the case, saying he only asked Hill questions because his kids had told him previously that Hill had hit them. He also admitted he knew his wife and Hill were seeing each other.
"When I did see him, I asked him, 'Hey, were you putting your hands on my kids?'" said Winslow. "That's all I asked. I didn't say I was going to hurt him or anything. How can I lunge at you if I'm 10 feet away from you? If you see the film, I did not lunge at all; all I was doing was asking him questions."
News 4 questioned Winslow about why he was at the same donation center as his wife and Hill in the first place. He said that the day of the incident was also his daughter's birthday and that he was stopping by the plasma donation center to donate and get money to buy her a present.
"I wanted to get her a gift," said Winslow. "And I was like, man, I'm just going to, I'm going to go to the plasma donation place and get me a quick $70, you know, to get her another gift, and that's what I was there for. You know, I wasn't anticipating to see anybody there, let alone them, you know."
Winslow said his doctors told him he was shot five times, and he had to be hospitalized for over a week. He said he's now recovering at home, but cannot currently work and is having to use a walker to get around.
"It is painful," said Winslow. "Very painful."
Court records show Winslow's wife filed two protective orders against him in Logan County this year. A May order alleging Winslow harassed her was denied. However, a June order saying Winslow was abusive was granted. He denies being abusive and says that he felt like he wasn't listened to in court.
"I felt like I wasn't going to be heard," said Winslow. "I wasn't heard at all. You know, I just felt like no matter what, she's a woman, we're not going to believe you."
Winslow also denies deliberately violating the order, which says he shouldn't have contact with his wife unless it's about their children.
"I was not out there looking for an altercation at all, at all," said Winslow.
Winslow said he was also bothered by Hill being released from the Oklahoma County Jail over the weekend without any kind of notification to him.
"Nobody has reached out to me," said Winslow. "I found out through a text that he got out."
Jail records show Hill was released on August 2 due to a judge's order.
News 4 reached out to the Oklahoma County District Attorney's office Monday for an explanation. A spokesperson says the jail had to legally release Hill because criminal charges had not been filed at the time of his release; those charges are now pending.
"The system has failed me," said Winslow. "This guy does not want me alive, clearly."
News 4 also received the following statement from Hill's family:
Our family stands firm on the belief that this was self-defense. After everything we have heard about the victim we have no doubts that it is self-defense. We will stand by Micah throughout this whole thing. We, as a family are now fearful that Dre Winslow is going to come back and retaliate.
