OSBI investigating inmate death at Sequoyah County Detention Center
SALLISAW, Okla. (KNWA/KFTA) — The Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation are investigating an inmate's death at the Sequoyah County Detention Center.
SCSO said in a social media post that the detention staff found a 43-year-old female inmate unresponsive in her cell around 2:30 a.m.
Detention staff initiated emergency procedures and contacted emergency services.
SCSO said there were no apparent signs of injury or trauma. The woman had been in custody for around three weeks, according to the department.
An OSBI spokesperson told KNWA/FOX24 that investigators responded to the scene around 3 a.m. SCSO said that the State Medical Examiner’s Office also responded and has assumed responsibility for the investigation with OSBI.
The inmate's body will be transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Oklahoma City to determine the manner and cause of death.
SCSO said no further information would be released pending next of kin notification and the ongoing investigation.
