OKC man nearly shot in burglary attempt, police searching for suspects

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – An Oklahoma City man says he's thankful to be alive after someone shot at him, who police say also tried to steal from his family.

The incident happened on September 6 in a neighborhood near Southeast 59th Street and Shields Boulevard, according to a police report obtained by News 4. Oklahoma City police shared video footage of the two individuals they suspect of the burglary and shooting with the public on Tuesday.

News 4 compared the video shared with the public to information obtained in the report and made contact with Dusty Young, who identified himself as the primary victim in the case.

Young said that in the early hours of September 6, he observed two individuals who he says had broken into a Ford Mustang owned by another family member. Young shared another video clip of his initial confrontation with the suspects. In the video, you see Young running outside of his house, claiming he has a gun. Young told News 4 employees he did not have a gun on him and only wanted to scare the individuals off, believing they were underage kids who had made a bad decision.

I just figured it was some kids just making trouble," said Young. "Even if I had a weapon, I wouldn't have pulled the trigger at that time, because that wasn't the right moment."

In the video, you hear and see the impact of at least one shot. Police say one of the suspects fired in Young's direction. Young said he was so close to one of the suspects that he could see the gun clearly and see the ignition of gunpowder and flash as a bullet tore past him.

"All I could think of was my kids and my family and how mad it made me for them to shoot at me," said Young.

News 4 employees observed the impact on the side of Young's home. He said that while his family was home at the time, thankfully, no one was hurt. He said he did try to find the suspects after telling another family member to call the police on the night of the incident, but that he and the police were unsuccessful.

"My family and I could have died that night if he had shot me, and it would have hit me; it probably would have killed me," said Young. "So that's the only thing that I would say that...do the right thing."
