1st grader gets big surprise in military homecoming

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. (KFOR) — A special surprise homecoming for a first grader. His mother, who serves in the army, is finally back home and surprised her son at school on Friday morning.

It's a moment that first grader, Kyslan Washington, never expected when he got to school on Friday.

A student of the month assembly turned into a big moment of joy when his mom, Private Serrace Watts, surprised him.

Watts has been away for six months in Army training and only got to talk to her son on the phone.

"The beginning was only every Sunday. And then it became every...every day. And then two or three times a day," said Serrace Warrs, an Army Private.

Their first hug after reuniting is something she'll never forget.

"Unreal, like, unreal. I missed him....I missed him," said Watts.

If getting to hug his mom for the first time in a while wasn't enough, Kyslan is also celebrating something of his own!

"I'm excited...and it's his birthday!" said Watts.

A much-needed reunion as Watts' family also came to Cleveland Bailey Elementary to celebrate the surprise. Watts' sisters are happy she's home, too.

"She's my best friend, so I have been missing her," said Luvnique Lee, Serrace Watts' sister.

"I'm just happy to have her home," said Precious Watts, Serrace Watts' sister.

Even Watts' nieces are thankful they get to hug her once again.

"I was happy to see her," said Kayrah Williams, Serrace Watts' niece.

As the family celebrated their reunion, there was some good news too! In a few weeks, Watts will be stationed in Hawaii, and Kyslan gets to go with her.

He said he's excited to go to the beach and find seashells.

Kyslan and his mom will be in Hawaii for three years. Watts said the next few weeks will be spent soaking up time with family, and her sisters already have plans to visit Hawaii as soon as possible.
