Six students and a staff member from Guthrie High School recovering after car crash

0

PAYNE COUNTY (KFOR) - Guthrie Public Schools says students and a staff member were involved in a head-on collision on State Highway 33 and Coyle Road.

Six students and a choir director from Guthrie High School were hit head-on by a pickup.

The school shared these pictures from the scene.

The school district says the group was coming home from the Oklahoma State football game in Stillwater.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a pickup truck could not stop in time when a car turned left onto Coyle Road. That's when the pickup driver swerved and hit the school's car head-on.

The school says the students were working a concession stand at the game, trying to raise money for their choir program.

Four of the occupants of the Guthrie Public Schools vehicle were transported by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries to O.U. Medical Center, Integris Baptist and Stillwater Medical Center including GHS Choir Director, Bill Perring. Two of the students were later released at the hospital. The remaining three students were released to their parents at the scene.

The choir director seen in the photo above from Guthrie High School was taken to the hospital.

His son tells News 4 that his father, who was driving the school's vehicle, was released from the hospital Saturday afternoon.

His family says it will take weeks, if not months, to recover from his injuries.

They're asking for all the prayers they can get.

At this time we dont know the condition of the remaining student.

Guthrie Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said in a statement:

We are extremely thankful that the accident wasn’t worse given how the scene appeared. We expect everyone to make a full recovery. I want to thank the first responders on the scene for their outstanding work including the Coyle Fire Department, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Payne County Sherriff’s Office, Lifenet from Stillwater and the Guthrie Fire Department EMS. They were professional and compassionate in all aspects of rendering aid. This was truly close to your worst nightmare.

Dr. Mike Simpson, Guthrie Superintendent
