How autumn can be beneficial for your brain, according to a psychologist

0

(WKBN) - Monday is the first official day of fall. If you're happy to say goodbye to summer, you're in good company. Many people seem to enjoy this time of year, but why is that?

The changing colors, the soft texture of warm clothing, breathing in the scent of cinnamon and other spices -- all ways the season engages our senses.

These aspects of fall can trigger the reward center of the brain and release dopamine, which makes us feel cozy, calm and nostalgic during autumn. Dr. Susan Albers, a Cleveland Clinic psychologist, pointed to some of the benefits of the cool, crisp air of fall brings, offering a nice change of pace from the summer heat.

"The cooler air makes it much easier to go outside to take a hike, enjoy the outdoors, exercise. That may be tough to do during the hot summer months," Albers explained. "This outdoor activity raises the oxygen level in our brains, which helps us to think clearer and feel calmer. So a few minutes outside during the cool, crisp air can do wonders for our bodies and our brains."

The "scarcity effect" of all things pumpkin-spiced, typically only available during fall, can add to the magic as well.

For those with children in school, a more predictable, consistent routine is an added benefit. Albers noted that set dinner and bedtimes that are more prevalent during these times of routine may help you thrive.

You may also sleep better during this time of year, according to Albers. With fewer daylight hours and earlier sunsets, it can be easier to get the optimal seven to nine hours of sleep nightly.
