Oklahoma Tax Commission alerts taxpayers to text message scam

0

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - Officials with the Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) are sounding the alarm, warning taxpayers about fraudulent text messages regarding tax refunds.

OTC says, the scam message states that a "tax refund request has been processed and approved" and directs recipients to click a link or reply to provide payment information.

The messages are not from OTC.

“The OTC will never send unsolicited text messages asking taxpayers to provide personal data, banking details, or payment information,” said OTC Executive Director Doug Linehan. “Anyone who receives such a message should not click on any links or respond.”

Taxpayers who receive suspicious messages are urged to do the following:

  • Delete them immediately
  • Those who provide information should contact their financial institution and report the incident to the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Unit at consumerprotection.ok.gov.

Questions can be directed to pressinquiries@tax.ok.gov.
