Shooting at OSU leaves students worried
STILLWATER, Okla. (KFOR) - Early Sunday morning, three people were shot on Oklahoma State University's campus at a residential hall.
Students at Carreker East Hall say they are scared after the shooting happened right outside their front door.
"So I originally found out first from a text from a friend saying, Hey, are you okay?" said Isiah Newkirk, resident at Carreker Hall.
Around 3:40 am, OSU Police responded to a call about a gunshot victim outside a McDonald's, close to campus.
"The Oklahoma State University Police Department overheard a call on the Stillwater Radio channel of an injured person at McDonald's on Duck Street. Our officers were the first to arrive," said Chief Michael Beckner, with OSU Police.
Moments later, police received a call about gunfire outside Carraker Hall.
"Upon arrival, there was multiple vehicles leaving the scene, and officers secured the scene, started talking to people. There were no victims on scene when we arrived," said Chief Beckner.
Police say that while they were investigating at the residential hall, two more gunshot victims showed up at different hospitals.
In the latest update, police say this all began at an after-party and that shots were fired as a result of a disagreement.
"It's a little scary," said Cole Zihala, resident at Carreker Hall.
It's OSU's homecoming weekend, and many students we talked to were already at home when this happened.
"I was asleep. And then I thought I heard something like it, like three and something in the morning. I woke up, figured it was just a fever dream," said Finn Yeomans, resident at Carreker Hall.
Now they're worried about something like this happening right outside their front door.
"It's definitely frightening knowing that, you know, you could walk out there and, you know, there's something like that could happen," said Yeomans.
"Well, it worries me quite a bit because, I mean, it happened right outside my right outside my door, basically," said Newkrik.
Now, investigators are left with trying to figure out who is responsible.
"At this time, we do not have anybody in custody, but we do have some solid leads, and we are asking the public for help," said Chief Beckner.
OSU President Jim Hess and Governor Kevin Stitt made statements:
The safety and well-being of the Cowboy family is our highest priority. We are committed to providing the resources and support needed to ensure the ongoing health and safety of our campus community.
OSU President Jim Hess
Sarah and I are praying for everyone at Oklahoma State University after this morning’s incident.
Governor Kevin Stitt
The State is coordinating with university officials and providing support in the investigation. OSU has confirmed the campus is safe, and we’re grateful for the quick response from local law enforcement.
