El Reno community remembers Sgt. Thomas Duran
EL RENO, Okla. (KFOR) - The city of El Reno has come together to honor an officer killed in the line of duty.
Sergeant Thomas Duran was hit by a car on Friday, October 17th.
"We took that call knowing it's one of yours, one of your own, and it's difficult," said Chief Ken Brown. "I mean, imagine even a loss or injury to a family member."
Thursday night, family, friends, and law enforcement from across the state lined the hallways of OU Medical for an honor walk, as family recognized Sgt. Duran's wishes to be an organ donor.
"It's admirable beyond words that even in the worst times, Sgt. Duran is still giving back to this community," said Mark Nelson, President of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Dozens of flowers were placed on top of a police car outside the El Reno Police station, paying tribute.
Just down the road, at the Elks Lodge, they're raising money for the Duran family.
"100% of everything that comes in tonight, including tips, and whatnot, is going right back to the family," said Jared Holden, Elks Lodge.
A $10 spaghetti dinner, offering the community a time to give and a time to heal together.
"It's been a beautiful coming together as well to support this event," said Holden. "You don't just have people from our community come in and support it; you have people from other communities. So, I think it just goes to show that this community is strong and there's nothing going to hold us down."
