LAKE CHARLES, La. (KLFY)-- Two people were arrested, and one person was discovered with a gunshot wound after a pursuit with authorities, according to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Around 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, deputies were informed of a potential suspect vehicle that was involved in a string of vehicle burglaries. After learning the suspect vehicle was at a pawn shop on Ryan Street in Lake Charles, deputies pulled up to what they described as a red Hyundai Elantra.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the vehicle sped away from the shop, which resulted in a deputy shooting into the vehicle and hitting the driver. The incident escalated into a pursuit with deputies that ended when the suspect vehicle crashed near the intersection of Ike Street and Kingham Road.
The vehicle's occupants fled on foot, but were later arrested in the 2100 block of Willowick Street. Three suspects, one from the original scene and two from the second scene near Willowick Street, were transported to a local hospital for treatment. No officers were injured during the incident.
Two of the suspects, Joshua R. Garcia, 18, of Lake Charles, who fled from deputies on foot, and Nicholas D. Kirkum, 23, Lake Charles, who was located at the business, were arrested Wednesday evening and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center.
Garcia was charged with resisting an officer by flight. His bond was set at $5,000. Kirkum was charged with illegal possession of stolen things. His bond is still pending.
A warrant was issued for the other suspect, Dakota W. Hall, 27, Lake Charles, who is currently still in the hospital. He is charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer, aggravated flight from an officer and resisting an officer by flight. His bond was set at $305,000.
The investigation is continuing into the vehicle burglaries and more charges are likely, authorities said.
Louisiana State Police is the lead investigating agency for the deputy-involved shooting. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Forensic Investigative Unit responded and is assisting with the processing of the scene.
