SLEMCO says customers will see rise in electricity bill, here's why

SLEMCO says customers can expect to see an increase in the fuel portion of their electric bill.

LOUISIANA (KLFY) -- SLEMCO says customers can expect to see an increase in the fuel portion of their electric bill.

The electric utility provider said they have been notified by electricity generators that a temporary cost increase has gone into effect for the fuel portion of what it takes to generate SLEMCO's electricity.

SLEMCO mentioned that the temporary increase in the fuel portion stems from historically low water levels by the recent drought that caused increased cost to transport coal down the Mississippi River for the past few months. They said to decrease the burden of increased prices on businesses and families, they will spread out the cost over twelve months.

The company also said that the cost associated with the fuel used to generate electricity on customer's bills does not go to SLEMCO, therefore they will not see profits from the increased portion of bills.

Should you have any questions about these temporary cost increases, you can call our customer service department at 337-896-5200. To check out the comparison images of the Mississippi River in September 2021 and September 2023 provided by the NASA Earth Observatory, can you see it here.
