Support against short term rentals heads to Lafayette City Council

Over 600 signatures supporting no short term rentals in residential single family zones are headed for the Lafayette City Council.

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Over 600 signatures supporting no short term rentals in residential single family zones are headed for the Lafayette City Council.

Last week, the council approved a piece of property to be rezoned in such an area for the purpose of a short term rental.

Stephanie Cornay was at the meeting collecting signatures against such rezoning. "Developers and property owners in Lafayette have their property and it can be changed at any time for anything," says Cornay.

"This is basically taking a neighborhood and spot zoning property into a different zone. I really feel like that is the death nail of planning and zoning,” she continues.

Councilman Boudreaux explained the research and work was done to ensure the property will be an asset as opposed to a problem. Cornay says she got the signatures saying no more such rezoning and now the council has those signatures too. “I do not support spot zoning. I believe that is a poor way to develop a city and unreliable," says Cornay.

New city Councilman Thomas Hooks voiced an opinion. "This is about what's a good policy tool. l do not feel like it in terms of rezoning individual lots for particular uses. I think we will see more of these and I think we will need a better answer than the rezoning process."

April 1 is when short term rental owners must be licensed to operate.
