MELVILLE, La. (KLFY) – In partnership with The Mississippi Farm Bureau, The Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation is holding a grain bin safety and training workshop here at Cannatella Outdoors Farms.

This comes just two weeks after first responders recovered the body of a man who fell into a grain bin and died. Vincent Cannatella, owner of Cannatella Outdoors Farms says he's farmed his entire life and accidents involving grain bins and silos can happen to the most experienced worker. "The Mississippi Farm Bureau, they have this trailer that we do a demonstration on recovery of somebody stuck to simulate them, stuck in a grain tank and the proper way to recover them in," says Cannatella.

Playing an important role in storing grain, grain bins and silos can be dangerous to workers and farmers who work in them. "You know, it's not just a matter of knowing what to do. There is equipment you need to have to make a proper recovery of someone. And unfortunately, just funding prevents a lot of these, you know, fire departments mostly from having the right supplies and the right equipment."

Cannatella says as someone who works in grain bins himself, he tries to prepare his employees as best as he can with safety tips to remember when they are in bins and silos.

"The number one thing we tell all of our employees is you never go inside of a tank when it is running, when it's operable. If you need to go in there, you don't go by yourself. You always have someone with you. And if there's grain in the tank, you need to be tethered off with a harness on in the event you have to go in there. But the main thing is that you. You always have someone with you and you're not by yourself."

He says the workshop put on by both the Louisiana and Mississippi Farm Bureaus will be extremely beneficial, especially because of the recent incident.

"I believe that everyone that's going to be at this training this time, I think everyone's going to remember everyone has a, you know, they have a personal connection to knowing how to do this now. And I think they'll remember I know I'll remember the rest of my life the proper way to do this and the steps that need to be done."
