Off-duty St. Landry corrections deputy killed in Tuesday night Opelousas shooting
Opelousas Police said they received a report of shots fired in the 1100 block of Park Avenue at approximately 10:30 p.m. Tuesday
UPDATE, 4/24/24, 11 a.m.: Officials have confirmed the person killed in Tuesday night's shooting was an off-duty corrections deputy with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office.
Chanterria Albert, 23, was employed at the St. Landry Parish jail for less than two years, according to St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz.
"My entire staff and I are mourning the loss of one of our family members as a result of senseless gun violence last night in the City of Opelousas," Guidroz said. "Corrections Deputy Chanterria 'Mackey' Albert was hired on May 10, 2022, in Corrections and served alongside of her mother, Deputy Cherikas Albert. Deputy Albert was only 22 years old and was an exemplary deputy. She will be sorely missed."
ORIGINAL STORY: OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) -- One person was killed and another hospitalized in a shooting overnight in Opelousas, authorities said.
Opelousas Police said they received a report of shots fired in the 1100 block of Park Avenue at approximately 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, where officers found multiple shell casings in the vicinity.
Shortly after, OPD was alerted to two gunshot victims who had been transported to a local hospital. One of the victims died, the other victim is currently in stable condition receiving medical treatment.
The identity of the deceased victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing. No further details about the incident or suspects were released. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
