Louisiana man arrested after 2-year-old child found with high blood alcohol content

A Louisiana man was arrested after a child in his care registered a blood-alcohol level nearly three times that which is considered drunk, authorities said.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

OUACHITA PARISH, La. (KTVE/KARD) -- A Louisiana man was arrested after a child in his care registered a blood-alcohol level nearly three times that which is considered drunk, authorities said.

Deon Burns of Monroe is charged with charged with second-degree cruelty to juveniles.

The Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office was dispatched April 19 to a hospital in Monroe in reference to a two-year-old child having a very high alcohol content in his blood. According to authorities, hospital staff said the child weighed 27 lbs. and had a blood alcohol content of .236g%. A BAC of .08% is considered legally intoxicated in Louisiana.

Deputies said the child's mother left the child with her brother, Burns, at Cotton Wood Apartments while she was at work during the day. The child's mother said she observed her child unsteady on his feet, with a swollen face and blood coming from his mouth and nose upon returning home. She brought him to the hospital to be evaluated, at which time she learned of the alcohol content in his blood.

Officials said they located Burns and took him to the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office for questioning. Burns allegedly said he was drinking while he was caring for the child. According to deputies, Burns said after lunch he and the child were allegedly in bed together taking a nap while leaving the alcohol on a bedside table.

Burns said he didn't notice any alcohol missing when he awoke and that the child had a bloody nose due to allegedly running into the bedroom door before taking a nap. According to deputies, Burns claimed he did not give the child any alcoholic beverages and that the child did not touch his alcohol.

After obtaining Burns's testimony, he was transported to the Ouachita Correctional Center where he was charged with Second-Degree Cruelty to Juveniles. Bond details were not released.
