Henderson continues to experience mail challenges since post office closure
HENDERSON, La. (KLFY)- Earlier this year, the town of Henderson received a cluster of mailboxes to help residents with receiving mail since the post office closure, but so far, the mailboxes still aren't available for residents to use.
Henderson's Mayor, Sherbin Collette, said despite his efforts, the town is still waiting on answers.
"It's still in limbo right now and it's ridiculous," said Collette. "I don't know more of what I can do."
It's been two years since the post office in Henderson closed its doors, leaving many to have to travel to Breaux Bridge just to receive their mail.
To help with the lack of mail coming to the city, Collette said he previously signed a contact with the Breaux Bridge Postmaster, to install 100 cluster mailboxes at the old city hall in Henderson in February. Months later, Collette said he hasn't gotten a clear answer on if and when those mailboxes will become active.
"I asked the postmaster there, tell me what's happening, and every time he tell me something, it didn't come to fruition, and right now we're still waiting," said Collette.
Collette said he also requested to have individual mailboxes installed at each home in Henderson due to residents having a lack of transportation. However, the mayor said he was also denied this due to extra boxes being reserved for other parts of St. Martin Parish. Collette shared while he understands there is a process, however he believes residents deserve more.
"That's what I went for, they told me no," said Collette. "The reason of that is those extra boxes they have for people in the parish, which I understand part of it, but we shouldn't be suffering because of that."
News 10 reached out to the Breaux Bridge Postmaster for comment on when the cluster mailboxes will become active for residents. We were directed to the United States Postal Service corporate office who sent us a statement which stated.
