LHS football team gives back to community with garden makeover
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- The Lafayette High School (LHS) football team gave back to their community by helping Lafayette Elementary beautify their campus earlier this morning.
While the LHS campus is under construction, the LHS football team has been using the practice fields at Lafayette Elementary. Before dominating the football field this season, many of the football players wanted to show their gratitude for the school by updating the campus's gardens.
Jeremy Simon, the faculty supervising the creation of the new garden, shared how this makeover can help the school.
"This was an environmental school, and they had a garden here before. And so, we are going to keep that tradition going. It's in a perfect spot for the sun. " Simon said.
One of the students recognizing the need to give back is LHS Mighty Lion quarterback Richmond Saunier, who believes with hard work like this can help make a difference in many students' lives.
"The school's giving us a lot. We are practicing here while our school is being built, and we are dealing with all the changes. And so it's just giving back." Saunier said.
Brett Frizzel, LHS football player, added how the volunteer work can help foster community support for everyone, especially during football season.
"It's simply amazing, because like the elementary school kids need to know that Lafayette High has their back." Frizzel said. "That way the parents or maybe event the kids come watch our games. The more people we have at our games the better."
Colleen Comeaux, Lafayette Elementary School Principal, shared that how the students spent all day cleaning the area, laying down cover, and helping put plants in the garden. Comeaux stated her appreciation for the help these athletes provided and how she looks forward to seeing the students enjoy the new and improved garden.
"And, they really do care about the community, and they do care about giving back. They are some amazing athletes, as well." Comeaux said.
By the time the school year begins, the space will provide students the learning opportunity of planting, growing and harvesting.
