Summer sticks around, Erin maintains strength in days ahead
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) - After a mostly dry and hot Saturday, quiet conditions return overnight to Acadiana. Temperatures will settle in the 70s with mostly clear skies and high humidity. Sunday starts out with sticky air and sunshine. Temperatures rise fast, reaching 90 degrees by lunchtime, and the mid 90s during the afternoon hours. Scattered storms will develop to bring cooling relief to the area during the afternoon and evening.
In the tropics, the focus has, and continues to be, on Hurricane Erin. As of Saturday evening, Erin is a Category 5 hurricane with 160 mph winds and a pressure of 915 mb. Erin looks to undergo an Eyewall Replacement Cycle Saturday night where winds decrease, pressure rises, but the storm increases its size. Erin is also finally getting some northward motion and is still on track to take a northerly turn between Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast. While major impacts are not expected, large swells and rip currents will be a threat from this storm along the East Coast as it remains a major hurricane through most of next week. We are also monitoring more tropical waves behind Erin that could develop, but there are no immediate concerns and the tropics should remain free of any new development through the upcoming week.
Locally, we will see a pretty benign, summer weather patter. Temperatures each afternoon will climb into the low and mid 90s, depending on if your location sees any rain. Rain chances will generally be around 30 per cent through the next 7 days, though some days may have more rain coverage. Otherwise, try to stay cool and remember to wear sunscreen!
