Witness testimony continues in Gary Haynes bribery trial
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- It's week two, day three, in the trial of former Assistant District Attorney Gary Haynes, who is facing federal charges of bribery and conspiracy.
The focus in the courtroom remained on the witness stand as one of the alleged participants in the scheme discussed his role in the purported kickbacks.
Dusty Guidry, a contract worker for the district attorney's Pre-Trial Diversion Program, described how everyone involved was to receive a percentage of one-third of the money paid into the program. Haynes' attorney reminded the court that Guidry had pleaded guilty in exchange for a more lenient sentence. Guidry testified about a conversation in which Haynes was praised for his good work.
According to the evidence presented, there was also mention of the purchase of an $80,000 truck. Haynes' attorney questioned the validity of Guidry's testimony, arguing that while there were exchanges via phone or text, Haynes' name was never mentioned.
Defense stated that the praise for a job well done could have referred to anything and that the truck could have been purchased for anyone.
An FBI agent testified that Guidry discussed his role in the kickback scheme but failed to mention Haynes' name in the Bill of Information that he signed in exchange for a lighter sentence. The court will resume on Thursday, and the judge anticipates proceedings could lead to closing arguments.
