UPDATE, 9/19/25, 4:45 p.m.: A student attempted to enter New Iberia Senior High School while in possession of a firearm, police said.

According to police, School Resource Officer was immediately alerted, and additional patrol officers were dispatched to the scene. The individual was taken into custody without incident, and the firearm was safely recovered and secured.

Police said suspect has been identified as a current student of the school; however, they were not on campus at any point earlier in the school day.

ORGINAL STORY: NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) -- A person trying to enter New Iberia Senior High School with a gun this afternoon was stopped by police, authorities said.

According to a message sent to parents by the Iberia Parish School District, an unidentified individual tried to enter the school with a gun on his person.

"Thanks to our safety protocols and the use of our weapons detectors, staff were able to prohibit access before he was able to enter the facility," the message read.

The school resource officer and New Iberia Police were able to remove the person from campus. Officials said the person did not set foot in the building.

"At no time did the individual pose a threat to the staff and students thanks to the swift response of the joint effort of staff and law enforcement," the message said.

No other details were released.
