Dry air continues Sunday with plentiful sunshine

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) - After a hot, but dry, Saturday around Acadiana, quiet conditions settle back in for Acadiana overnight. Skies remain mostly clear and dry air will allow temperatures to drop into the 60s area-wide. Sunday will see plentiful sunshine again around the area as temperatures reach the upper 80s in the afternoon. A nice breeze will kick up during the afternoon hours to provide some relief from the heat.

We are following two systems in the tropics. The first is Hurricane Humberto which has rapidly intensified into a Category 5 hurricane. It still has an opportunity to get slightly stronger Sunday before dry air and wind shear kick in to start breaking it down. It still is expected to remain a major hurricane through midweek as it passes west of Bermuda. From there, it is expected to turn out into the open Atlantic and weaken.

We're also monitoring Tropical Depression Nine which has formed near the Bahamas. Through the next two days or so, it will lift northward and gradually strengthen. However, it will be going over the Gulf Stream - a warm tongue of water that runs along the entire Eastern Seaboard - and we could see another case of rapid intensification if it can stabilize itself prior to wind shear arriving Wednesday. The big question is how close it will get to the Southeast Coast. Models today show it stalling and then turning eastward into the Atlantic, keeping the bulk of impacts away. But some models still try to get it to land prior to the eastward movement, so we need to follow this closely for our East Coast friends. Regardless, rough surf, strong winds and squalls, and rip currents will be a big threat from Florida to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Locally, our forecast remains mostly quiet through midweek. Mornings will be comfortable in the 60s with afternoon temperatures around 90 and lots of sunshine. By Thursday and Friday, we will see a few showers sneak back into the picture with better rain chances heading into next weekend.
