LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Doctors for Access, a grassroots network of Louisiana physicians, is organizing free prescription pop-up drives to ensure families can get vaccinated this season.

Louisiana is one of the few states that requires prescriptions for recommended adult vaccines, a policy that doctors warn is putting lives, hospitals, and communities at risk. Rising healthcare costs and a severe physician shortage exacerbate the issue, leaving many without access to necessary prescriptions.

Dr. Britni Hebert, a spokesperson for Doctors for Access, emphasized the urgency of removing prescription barriers.

"Our safest viral season is with vaccines," said Herbert. "Prescription barriers cost lives. State leaders can fix this."

Local physicians are stepping in to provide free prescriptions by paying out of their own pockets and sacrificing time with their families. However, they stress that volunteer efforts alone cannot meet the demand, and without state action, Louisiana may face preventable deaths this viral season.

"No medical intervention in history has saved more lives, with less risk, than vaccines," said Hebert. "The prescription barrier is unnecessary, and it’s blocking families from care. Our state can remove that barrier today and save lives."

Several states have issued executive orders allowing pharmacies to bypass prescription requirements, and doctors argue that Louisiana residents deserve similar support.

The first prescription drive will be held on Friday, Oct. 3, from 1-3 p.m. at Lafayette Internal Medicine Clinic. Prescriptions will require a photo ID, and patients must be eighteen or older. Pregnant patients are encouraged to attend.
