Hurricane Hunters: What it's like to fly into Nature's strongest storms

0

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) - Known for their daring trips into the worst weather in the world, Hurricane Hunters sat down with News 10 to talk about storm chasing and their mission to keep others informed on the latest forecasts.

The Hurricane Hunters are a vital asset to weather data collection that betters meteorologists' forecasting abilities and understanding of tropical cyclones.

Not only do the Hurricane Hunters fly in to reach the eye of the storm, they establish the lowest pressure of the storm to pinpoint its center. During the whole journey, they release "dropsondes" - instruments that read the atmosphere's temperature, dewpoint, pressure, and wind speed and direction - to collect the latest information which is then added to model data.

This whole process allows meteorologists to accurately forecast tropical cyclones many days prior to landfall, giving coastal residents ample time to prepare for any approaching storms.

Storm Team 10 Meteorologist Adam Olivier discussed all that goes into a Hurricane Hunter flight with Quinn Kalen, a Flight Director with NOAA Aircraft Operations Center.
