Gov. Jeff Landry restricts state's AI use amid spying concerns

0

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry issued an executive order to monitor how the state uses artificial intelligence (AI).

In the executive order, Landry said some foreign-controlled AI programs, such as Deep Seek, which is influenced by Chinese AI systems, can be used as tools to spy on American citizens.

“This executive order puts America and Louisiana first. We will not let the Chinese Communist Party spy on our state or steal from our people,” said Landry. “As technology advances, so do the threats. This executive order ensures we are protecting our people, our data, and our national security from the Communist Chinese Party's (CCP) growing influence in AI.”

The order requires that any state office must get approval before using AI and cannot buy or start using new AI technology until Dec. 15, 2025. By this date, state technology leaders must have made safety rules for using AI. Once the new rules are in effect, any AI data must be checked and cleaned.
