Scott house fire results in the loss of a family service dog

0

SCOTT, La. (KLFY) -- A Scott family of eight escaped a house fire without injury Saturday night, but not without a tragic loss.

The fire that erupted around 9 p.m. severely damaged the Leger family home and resulted in the loss of the family's service dog.

The fire started in the bedroom of Leger's daughter, according to investigators. Toby Leger, the homeowner, said he arrived home to see his home on fire.

"When we got here, they had fire trucks, and you couldn't get in," Leger said. "Fire trucks blocked everything off. They discovered that first off the whole house was engulfed in smoke and my daughter's room was the one that had caught fire."

Two dogs and a guinea pig were rescued from the fire, but tragically, the family's service dog did not survive.

"It wasn't what we lost, it is what my daughter lost," Leger said. "Because the effects of her losing her service animal far outweigh the beds, the dressers, the clothes. She has been in a pretty bad state of mind."

Leger expressed gratitude for the support from the community, emphasizing the importance of prayer and emotional support over material assistance.

"You know the power of prayer to me is worth more than any dollar, because at least that shows that there are people out there that care," he said.

Donations to assist the Leger family can be made on the family's Go Fund Me page.
