Breast cancer survivor credits strength to loved ones and humor
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Nicole Disotell was diagnosed with breast cancer after her first mammogram at age 45, a diagnosis that changed her life and that of her family.
After receiving the diagnosis, Disotell's immediate concern was how to break the news to her family, particularly her three daughters, as she had always been their source of strength.
"It was going to be extremely hard telling them, because I am their rock and I was always the one who did everything," Disotell said.
Disotell emphasized the importance of having a strong support system during her battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family, friends and coworkers who stood by her throughout the emotional journey.
One poignant moment came when her fifteen-year-old daughter was brushing her hair, and a clump fell out, prompting Disotell's sister to organize a "Shave the Brave" party. This event allowed family and friends to participate in cutting Disotell's hair, symbolizing their support and helping her take ownership of her hair loss.
Disotell's treatment plan involved chemotherapy sessions every three weeks, each lasting three hours. Throughout her treatment, Disotell found solace in humor and positivity.
"As hard as it is you have to find something positive and I did," she said.
Disotell's experience highlights the critical role of family and community support in facing cancer, as well as the personal strength required to find joy amidst adversity.
"I am only as strong as the people around me," she said.
