BATON ROUGE, La. (KLFY) -- An Arkansas man is charged with theft after allegedly using a dead person's identity to defraud the Louisiana State Retirement System, authorities said.

Derrick Mullins, 50, of Forrest City, Arkansas, is charged with 20 counts of theft.

The Louisiana Bureau of Investigation received a request for assistance from Louisiana State Employees Retirement System (LASERS) regarding allegations of fraud.

Officials said they learned someone had been receiving benefits in the name of a LASERS member who has been dead since August 2020.

Investigators said Mullins, the deceased retiree’s nephew, defrauded LASERS of more than $33,000 between August 2020 and December 2024.

LBI agents arrested Mullins Tuesday. He was booked without incident into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Bond details were not released.

The investigation is ongoing.
