Louisiana State Treasurer campaigns against Bill Cassidy for Senate seat
LOUISIANA, (KLFY) -- Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming is campaigning for the U.S. Senate, challenging incumbent Republican Senator Bill Cassidy.
Fleming, who previously served in the Trump administration, is positioning himself as a staunch conservative alternative to Cassidy, emphasizing his conservative voting record and opposition to Cassidy's actions.
John Fleming emphasized his conservative stance, mentioning his support for anti-immigration policies and pro-gun rights.
Fleming criticized Cassidy for voting to convict former President Trump.
"He was one of seven Republicans along with the Democrats that did that," said Fleming.
Fleming claims to have been a supporter of the "Make America Great Again" movement before it became widely popular.
"What we like to say is I was MAGA before MAGA was cool," said Fleming.
Fleming also opposes carbon capture and sequestration, contrasting his views with those of Cassidy.
"We can't get CO2 in the ground fast enough, according to Senator Cassidy," he said. "I, on the other hand, have always opposed the Green New Deal, climate change ideologies that really are a waste of taxpayer money."
Fleming brings experience as a practicing physician, a Navy medical doctor and a businessman to his campaign, emphasizing his background as a conservative Christian.
In addition to Cassidy, Fleming faces competition from Lafayette State Representative Julie Emerson, New Iberia State Senator Blake Miguez and Public Service Commissioner Eric Skrmetta in the upcoming election.
